Create A Collage

Today Room Eight was learning about making collages. What we had to do was get a picture of the New Zealand bird that you like and try to recreate it by using the tools on a google drawing. My bird was the Tomtit. Here is my work.

Toki Pounamu Film Fesival

Toki Pounamu Film Festival Review

On Thursday the 14th of November, the senior school of Karoro went to the Greymouth Regent theatre the Toki Pounamu Film Festival. There were a lot of other schools there as well; St Patrick’s, Paroa, Kaniere, Blaketown, Paparoa Range, Kumara and Karoro schools.

The Toki Pounamu Film Festival is when people from schools make short films and we get to watch them at the festival, some people may or may not make it in. For this year the category was Our Place. Some schools used drones. Some videos didn’t make it in, but are still available to watch on the film festival website.

My favourite film was the one by Catlin Boddy, Sammi Fahey and Pippa Robb. They are from Paroa School. I really enjoyed the humor in it, the film made me laugh. They are all very good actors and they did it on a good day, because there was no wind or noise in the background that made it so we cannot hear it.

In conclusion, I hope that they still run the Toki Pounamu Film Festival, and maybe change the categories or include more than one category to choose from. Overall I think that the Toki Pounamu Film Festival is an amazing thing and that the films this year were spectacular.

The Amazing Adventure Of Superstan

 The Amazing Adventure Of SuperStan

On Wednesday the 7th of August, Karoro School was invited to Greymain School
haul to a show called “The Amazing Adventure Of Superstan”.

At the start, Stan was daydreaming of being a superhero and he was fighting
someone called the boogie man and how the boogie man wanted to take the key and rule Proton park
. Then he got interrupted by his friend called D.C after a while the Candy King came in with
Gobstoppers and was trying to take over Proton Park. He gave the gobstoppers to the
citizens of Proton Park and now they were under his control.

Then in came these two twins called Curly and Whirly, they came in for a job at the
Candy Kings fun factory. What they had to do was use the remote on the town to see if it works.
After that Stans Grandmother came in to see Stan and D.C with her marathons group and said
that someone is coming and that they have to hide. When they hid it was Curly and Whirly that
came and they were discussing about Candy Kings great evil plan. After they left they all were
worried then Stans grandmother came up with something, she said that he was their only
hope to save Proton park from the Candy King.

When Stan was younger his grandmother gave him formula 44 and that she gave him half
of it and his grandmother gave him the other half then he turned into a superhero called
Superstan. He wore his grandads underwear so he could fly. The Curly and Whirly were put
in charge of protecting the bottom secret basement and then Superstan came in but they
were too scared so they went in the elevator and ran off.

Once he got the remote, he suddenly turned back to his normal self and his powers were gone.
Then his grandmother came through with a big needle and injected him with some more formula 44.
Then the Candy King came and tried to shrink him with the caramelizer but it backfired and then Candy
King began to shrink.

In the end, superstan saved his town overall and became the hero.

Poems

     Feather
I chased the bird as fast as I can
The wind vroomed past my ear
“ I wonder where he went”
I looked on the ground I found A feather
                                                                     I picked it up,
I sniffed the feather, It smells like flowers.
I sniffed it once more, it tickled beneath my nose.
                                                                           ACHOO!!

                                                          Hockey
I sprint down the prickly turf
                                                           In the splashing rain
                                                                           SPLOSH!
The loud thump of the two hockey sticks slamming together
                                                                            BANG!!
The white ball  swiftly running away from me
The loud splashes of rain drops falling onto my hair
                                                                           SPALSH!!
7 minutes until the horn goes
                                                              My toes feel tired
                                                             Like twisted wires
2 minutes until the horn goes
                                                                    I get the ball
                                                                          Swish!!
                                                           Into the goal it goes
                                                          The game is finally over

Embeding My Stars Poem Screencastify

Today Room 8 was with Ms Minehan and we worked on how to put a screencastify on our blog by embeding the video. Personally I think this is way easier and quicker to use.

Jake Bailey Speech

Jake Bailey Speech

On Wednesday the 31st of July Jake Bailey came to Karoro School. He came to our school today to talk about his fight with cancer, about bravery, happiness, resilience, leadership and long life skills.

Jake Bailey was talking about how in his last year of high school he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Jake told us that we should have resilience and you shouldn’t worry about what other people are thinking about you, other life skills he told us about was to be brave and keep moving forward even if you are feeling scared inside. He said we have a responsibility to live our lives and take every opportunity, give our very best to be the best person we can.

I thought Jake Bailey was very inspirational.

Malala Yousafzai: Against The Odds Book Review

 Book Review
Malala Yousafzai Against The Odds
Author: Claire Thorp

Would you like to hear a thrilling story of a young girl who doesn’t want anything
but education?

This book is set in the present day in the Southern Asia, Pakistan. Pakistan’s
neighbours are China, India, Afghanistan and Iran.

Malala Yousafzai Against The Odds tells the story of how women weren’t allowed
their rights in Pakistan and how Malala stood up for women's rights to have the
freedom that they needed.

Malala Yousafzai is a girl who was born with talent. Malala and other women in
Pakistan weren’t allowed to have freedom, but Malala stood up for her rights
and kept doing what she loved. Women weren’t allowed to go into town without a
male. Malala thought that was wrong. Women weren’t allowed to go to school.
Malala’s father, (Ziauddin Yousafzai) set up a school for girls, there were
only two rooms in that school. Malala’s Mother (Tor Pekai) couldn’t read or write
because of the way that they were treated.

Malala has been an inspiration to people all over the world to make peace. Malala
visited Nigeria where over 200 women had been kidnapped and sold for slaves.
She met with the parents of the kidnapped girls and she tried to persuade the
Nigerian President to raise enough money so that the parents can go see their
girls that have escaped. Eventually he decided to do it and they got to go see
their kids. I feel very sad that there are still Nigerian Women being used as slaves.

Personally this book is my favourite one yet. It’s a really good inspiration to
people and I think people all over the world should read it. For me I think the a
ge group for people to read is 10+.

Analogies DLO

Rendered Image
- Paua to beach as Fern to forest
- Kiwi is to small as Moa to big
- Swords to British as Pounamu To Maori
- Ruby Tui To Nz as Rebecca Clough Australia
- Nz storms to Australia’s sun

An Analogy is comparing an idea or a thing to another idea
that is quite different from that.
It targets at explaining something
that is familiar.

- Cheetah to fast as snail to slow
- Desert to hot as Antarctic to Cold
- Duckling to duck as Cub to Lion
- Neptune to cold as Venus to hot

Lake Daniell

Lake Daniell Responses

On Wednesday the 12th of June, Room 8 & 1 went on a
tramp to Lake Daniell. I went with my dad, he came
along as well. In my car group was Summer & Aimee, my
dad stopped at the petrol station and got us some Lollies!
Everyone stopped at Reefton for a toilet stop. Everyone went exploring and there was a BMX track. Ms Kemp called all of
us back in then we started to drive again.

When we got to the Marble Hill car park by Lake Daniell
we had to wait for the other cars to arrive. Before we
started the
walk we did a number off to know that everyone is here.
We started to walk and the nature was really fascinating.
We had a scavenger hunt to do and in my group was Jennae
& Brighid. The scavenger hunt was really hard. There was a
Long Tailed bat on there but they sleep during the day.
There was also a Blue duck, these birds are endangered.

Later on in the tramp we were super close to the hut & the
lake. When we got there Summer put her go-pro in the water
and it was so clear. We ate lunch, and went on the Jeti and
started to walk back.

As we were walking back Dakota showed me the Ice Cream
Plant you can eat. But the thing is that it is
the opposite of Ice Cream, it’s super spicy and burns
your tongue.
It was horopito!

I held back a bit to hang with my dad, we talked a lot,
it was really fun having my dad on the tramp.

When we got back we had to wait 20 minutes for the boys to
get there because they were taking super long but they were
going at their own pace. When we got back to school at 5:30ish,
everyone was super sore and ready for bed.
