Noho Marae Recount

On the 5th of March. Room 1 and 8 went to the Noho Marae for a night. When we got there we had to go through the powhiri process. The powhiri process is a way of being welcomed into a sacred space. I have been to the marae before. When we had finished the powhiri process we went to the wharekai (dining room) and had some food. The food there was red velvet cake and pies. After we finished our kai, we went into the whare (meeting house) and did our mihi. I was a nervous wreck, we had to start with our mountain which made it a bit harder and then all the stuff that was here before you. After that, we went back into the wharekai and had our lunch, for lunch we had our own packed lunch boxes. Once we finished we went down to the river and tried to find some pounamu. Only a couple of people found pounamu. I found serpentine, it looked just like pounamu. I found a ton of serpentine. After we got ready to go down to the beach and do a sculpture competition. In my group was Jennae, Lily and myself. We did Waitaiki of Poutini and Waitaiki. Then we walked back to the marae and we got told some maori legends of the carvings inside the marae.
After that, we came back and we had dinner, we had chicken, veggies and gravy. After, we played some night games the games there were, Ki o rahi/scavenger hunt, carving, tukutuku, Rippa Rugby and weaving. When we finished, we went to the bathroom got dressed and brush our teeth, we played board games and went to bed.

In the morning, we got dressed and went to have breakfast. For breakfast there was toast and cereal. After breakfast we got ready for our day walk and it took about 1 and a half. When we got backed we packed our bags and left the marae.

Hockey

                                                  Hockey
I sprint down the prickly turf
                                                           In the splashing rain
                                                                           SPLOSH!
The loud thump of the two hockey sticks slamming together
                                                                            BANG!!
The white ball swiftly running away from me
The loud splashes of rain drops falling onto my hair
                                                                          SPALSH!!
7 minutes until the horn goes
                                                              My toes feel tired
                                                             Like twisted wires
2 minutes until the horn goes
                                                                     I get the ball
                                                                          Swish!!
                                                           Into the goal it goes
                                                          The game is finally over

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma GandhiImage result for mahatma gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi stood up for his rights,
exactly like Nelson Mandela had done. What he had done affected a lot of
people in a good way. Mahatma was born on 2nd of October 1869
and he died on the 30th of January 1948.

Firstly, Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India.
In India there was a lot of things that weren’t fair and
there was racism going around. Mahatma was greatly against it.
Mahatma Gandhi went to South Africa to work for the South African office
of an Indian legal firm. This is when Mahatma Gandhi unexpectedly found out
there was racism.
When he was on a train a white guy wouldn’t sit next to him,
he found out that Indians in South Africa were received with the worst jobs.

Secondly, Mahatma Gandhi was really famous for his actions and what he
believed. He helped the Indians, by denying to get his finger print scanned
and he wanted everyone to do the same. Mahatma thought that he helped the
Indians in his country. Then they all started to follow in his lead.

Finally, Mahatma Gandhi went to prison because he denied to the things that
the government told him. He protested peacefully against racism and many
Indians went to prison. Mahatma said “An eye for an eye makes the whole world
blind” Mahatma meant by saying that fighting is a really bad thing and how
it can bring the worse to people. I strongly believe that he should not have
gone to prison.

In conclusion, Mahatma Gandhi was a good person and did good things to have
equal rights. Mahatma Gandhi went to prison for trying to make equal
rights and make it fair. How his actions affected us today, that people
of all races are allowed to have any job and many people are inspired by him.
I think he was a good guy because he believed in equal rights and he
stood up for other people.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela

In room eight we have been learning about a man called Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela is from South Africa. Nelson is the reason why we have race relations day because he fought against white supremacy, segregation, and apartheid. Nelson won the Nobel peace prize in 1993.
He was born on the 18th of July 1918 and he died on the 5th December in 2013.

Firstly, Nelson Mandela fought against apartheid and segregation. Apartheid means when the whites in South Africa have good lives while the blacks are being treated unfairly and live in pain. Segregation means when one group of people are separated into groups based on race. I think it's not right to treat people unfairly and give whites a better life than the blacks just because of the colour of their skin are different. There is no reason why they cannot share their rights equally.

Secondly, Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, Mandela shared the Nobel peace prize with a man called Frederik Willen De klerk. Frederik Willen De klerk was the president of South Africa. They won the peace prize because they both fought against apartheid and segregation. I think that they deserved to win the Nobel peace prize.
Finally, Nelson Mandela was against white supremacy. In South Africa, Mandela was against white supremacy because he didn't think that was fair. The whites got all the privileges. The whites got big houses, electricity, proper lives and proper roads. Mandela also thought the blacks shouldn't have to live in tiny hovels with none of the things that the whites received. He didn't think it was fair based of the colour of their skin.
In conclusion, how we recognized Nelson Mandela is that he won the Nobel peace prize and made a difference to this world today. Mandela was very important in the way he stood up for his rights and those of his country. What he accomplished affects us today, in that everybody has equal rights no matter what the colour of their skin is.
